Big Night Out

Tonight is a veritable indie rock-o-rama in Nashville. Bright Eyes plays at the Ryman, Joseph Arthur is at the Exit/In, and The Rapture will test whether or not the chorus to "Whoo! Alright - Yeah... Uh Huh" was actually written about Nashville audiences when they roll into the Mercy Lounge. And me? I'll be kicking it old school at the Spring Swing at The Rutledge, where local burlesque troupe Lady & The Tramps and country club dance band The Golddiggers will be rocking like it's 1959.

The Golddiggers are fronted by Dave Willie, who was the lead singer for one of my favorite bands ever,
Jet Black Factory, and later fronted the existential swing band Nine Parts Devil. The last time I saw him perform was the final NPD show, and they closed with an obscure Frank Sinatra gem, "Bim Bam Baby." It was one of my favorite live cover moments ever, so I'm looking forward to seeing what his latest band does with an entire catalog of classics.

Happy Mum's Day

I had a couple of different ideas for songs for a Mother's Day post, but once I remembered this one, it was over. It's just too perfect. It's Dean Martin's solo performance from the greatest gangster musical ever made, Robin and the Seven Hoods. It's also easily the best Rat Pack movie. Sure you don't have Peter Lawford or Joey Bishop, but you gain Bing Crosby and Peter Falk, and that's more than a fair trade. If you like Johnny Dangerously, put this on your Netflix que. You won't be disappointed.

But enough about gangster movies... here's to my mom, and your mom, and my niece's mom, and every mom everywhere. Happy Mother's Day!

Cinco de Mayo

Usually I'm big on theme based celebrations. But today I'll be celebrating Mexican independence by eating lunch at a Jewish deli, and then heading to the Bronx, where my dream scenario is to see a player of Dominican descent hit one home run, and then watch the team he was drafted by win. If it's anything like last night was, it should be one hell of a game.

But since I need to do something thematically appropriate today, I went digging through my CDs before I left Nashville to find something in Spanish to post today. And honestly the choices we're pretty slim. It was basically either something Cuban, or this.

Tito Larriva - "Anarchy In The USA" (mp3)

This song is from the soundtrack to Bono's foray into screenwriting,
The Million Dollar Hotel. Tito's backing band on this song include's U2's rhythm section, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton, and British session guitarist Chris Spedding, who produced the Sex Pistols first demo session.

Whoops

So apparently I missed the memo that fileden cut their bandwidth limits for free accounts from twenty gigs a month to five. So if you've tried to listen to anything in the last day or two, it hasn't worked. Sorry about that. Future songs will be going up on filexoom, who don't change their plan limits and not tell you about it. I'd move the last few songs I've posted over there, but I'm catching an early plane tomorrow and sleep calls. Again, sorry.

To keep this place from being music free til I get back, here is one of the most perfect pop songs ever written...
